Chinese Landscape roll
This work is composed of numerous square transparent acrylic panels. Hemp ropes connect and suspend the individual panels, forming an extended composition reminiscent of the format of a traditional Chinese landscape scroll painting.
Each acrylic panel contains a series of irregular yet continuous openings. These voids suggest an unknown symbolic language, while also evoking fragments that have been lost, erased, or are missing. The landscape imagery on the acrylic surfaces is created through high-temperature etching. The resulting images are incomplete, fragmented, and interrupted by areas of absence and emptiness.
The work draws upon the visual language of traditional Chinese landscape painting while disrupting its continuity through fragmentation, loss, and blank space. These missing and empty areas function as metaphors for the uncertainties and cultural dilemmas of contemporary China, raising questions about cultural memory, inheritance, disappearance, and the reconstruction of identity.
