Zen Garden

This oil painting is composed of three separate canvas panels, each featuring a golden background. Inspired by Japanese gardens, I interpret the Japanese karesansui (dry landscape garden) through an approach that is almost abstract expressionist in nature.

The work is intangible and open to interpretation. The many irregular white dots resemble the gravel found in a Japanese garden, while also functioning like simplified or omitted symbols—suggesting mindfulness and a state of contemplation.

The solid wood frame that I created connects the three paintings into a single composition, while the hand-written calligraphy further reinforces the Eastern artistic character of the work.
